This weekend, my good friend Carol and I took a little jaunt up to New York just to enjoy a "ladies night out". We had originally planned to meet up with a friend of hers, but that fell through, so we decided we'd still go and make an evening of it. This is made easier by the fact that Dev lives a quick 45-minutes (by train) from Grand Central. Thanks for the accomodations, big brother! So we drove up to Dev's on saturday morning (I'm not even going to try and describe the beautiful drive amongst all the lovely fall-touched leaves) and dropped our stuff off at his house, then we caught the train into the city. Once we were there, we had a bite to eat at Grand Central, then started walking toward the theater district. We decided to stop right where we were at and make a phone call to see if we could get into Mary Poppins for a reasonable price, and as it turned out, we got them! (thirty-seven dollars for a sat evening show, not bad indeed!) So we killed time by stopping downtown to see Ground Zero (the new memorial builing is going up!) and window shopping. And I will say that when I shop in New York and only come away with a pair of very agreeably-priced shoes, I've done something right. We then got out of the rain and wind by having a drink at McDonald's (and trust me, this is not the McDonald's on your block. The one in Times Square is huge) and then we headed to our show.
The next day, we did a little shopping in Devan's town of Greenwich, (I love Sephora, don't you?) we headed home on another lovely, colorful drive. Here's some highlights:

Fall Vacation to a Summery Place
I'm going to warn you all right now-there are TONS of pictures ahead! Okay, fair warning.
This week was spent in the great state of Arizona, which always brings back memories of my childhood. My and I got in late on Monday night. Tuesday was spent at cousin Anji's with the kids (cousin Anji hosted us and showed us a great time!). We did a craft with leaves that my mom had brought with her (if I refer to my mom as "Nanda" in this narrative, it's because that's what the kids call her). We also went to the park and got on the swings.
The next day, we had lunch with a great friend from Lakeside- Robyn Rogers. In this picture, you'll also meet mom's leading man Greg!
We then took the kids to Build-A-Bear (An Aunt Heather tradition). Here's a few good ones from that.
The next day, we hit the zoo: You can see in the one picture, Rees and I are praying to the mist gods because we're so dang hot.
They got a little tired at the end.....
We spent that night at Monique's parent's house and had a lovely homemade mexican meal.
Friday, I rented myself a car (it turned out to be a PT Cruiser. I felt cool driving in that thing!) and drove to Tucson Arizona where I got to spend the evening with Catherine, a friend from my childhood.
Yesterday, we had to say good-bye. What a wonderful vacation. Hopefully we can get these guys back here one of these days!

Dewey Readmore Books
I found this book last night at Barnes and Noble and I've only read a few chapters, but I'm already in love with this cute kitty. On a cold night in January, someone stuffed him in the book return slot at a library. The then small kitten was found half frozen the next morning by the library staff. On frostbitten paws, he nuzzled each of the staff members, thanking them for rescuing him from the cold. This is just the beginning of Dewey's story and how he helped a small-town library survive. Anyone want to read this one with me?

Sorry Romeo.....
I used to be in LOVE with Romeo and Juliet. When I was fifteen, Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio were iconic for me, and there was no way to trump that as my favorite Shakespere movie. (I think anyone who knew me at that time will remember the six-foot long poster gracing my wall). But sadly, times change, and so do people's tastes. I have a replacement. It's actually been my favorite for some time, but I watched it again yesterday and I thought I'd share my opinion. Shakespere was a great writer (I'd hate to argue with historians and and literary scholars alike), however, I think the wit and humor, mixed in with a little drama that unfolds in this movie is absolutely brilliant. Some of my favorite lines are at the beginning when Beatrice and Bennedick are squaring off:
BEATRICE
I wonder that you will still be talking, Signior
Benedick: nobody marks you.
BENEDICK
What, my dear Lady Disdain! are you yet living?
BEATRICE
Is it possible disdain should die while she hath
such meet food to feed it as Signior Benedick?
Courtesy itself must convert to disdain, if you come
in her presence.
BENEDICK
Then is courtesy a turncoat. But it is certain I
am loved of all ladies, only you excepted: and I
would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard
heart; for, truly, I love none.
BEATRICE
A dear happiness to women: they would else have
been troubled with a pernicious suitor. I thank God
and my cold blood, I am of your humour for that: I
had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man
swear he loves me.
BENEDICK
God keep your ladyship still in that mind! so some
gentleman or other shall 'scape a predestinate
scratched face.
BEATRICE
Scratching could not make it worse, an 'twere such
a face as yours were.
Classic. Absolutely classic. If you've not seen this movie or the play, I would highly recommend it. Sorry Romeo. You've been replaced.
